I use cast off parts of machinery- pulleys, belts, old motors- and turn them into machines which may or may not have purpose, and may in some cases work towards their own defeat. Other works are simpler, wall hanging assemblage works involving wood, scraps of paper, rusty metal found on the side of the road, worn cloth wrapped wiring and bits from old electronics. Most of my work uses or at least references electricity- both it's attached infrastructure and it's use as motive power or to create light. I am fascinated by the industrial revolution and its implications for humans and their environment. I hold a high regard for history, not in the sense of a nostalgic look back, but the conviction that if history is not preserved, and is allowed to fade from memory (or is actively destroyed as the case may be) we as a culture then have no way to escape the certainty that we will repeat our mistakes.
